Dr. Michael Guttenberg EMS Physician of Excellence: Paul Barbara, MD

Dr. Paul Barbara has been an EMS Physician since 2008. He was an EMS Fellow with the FDNY, before joining Northwell at its Staten Island University Hospital facility. In addition to his Northwell responsibilities, Dr. Barbara is medical director for two volunteer ambulance agencies and is involved in supporting them educationally. Paul Barbara has dedicated himself to the improvement of EMS, from the pre-hospital setting and into the emergency department. He is chair of the NYC REMAC Credentialing & Certification Committee. This group is tasked with regionally credentialing NYC Paramedics, which is a difficult job in any region. He has reorganized this committee to expand its role into regional CME review, made development of the REMAC paramedic exam more inclusive, and is working on credentialing regional BLS Medical directors.

Dr. Barbara has worked to increase and improve the availability of quality CME in this region.  He has made it his cause to increase physician participation in EMS to medically strengthen this city’s EMS System. Dr. Barbara always makes himself personally available to paramedics under his supervision, and who deliver patients to his emergency department. He is approachable and supports EMS providers. He also promotes standards that pre-hospital providers should achieve by being a positive role model. Paul Barbara works to improve cooperation between the different EMS sectors in NYC. Finding ways to compromise – so that the needs of one sector do not negatively impact other sectors, while striving for the highest level of patient care.
